Promotions

Groups of wrestlers with their own champions are called promotions, the biggest of which being World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE, formerly WWF). As of now there is only one other promotion which is big competition to WWE, NWA-TNA. Former popular promotions include the National Wrestling Alliance (NWA), World Championship Wrestling (WCW, formerly part of the NWA) and Extreme Championship Wrestling (ECW).

They usually are known by a letter prefix, such as ECW for Extreme Championship Wrestling or WWE for World Wrestling Entertainment.

Mexican wrestling, known as Luche Libre, is a style of professional wrestling which is mostly focused on "high flying" wrestling. Much of it is similar to Japanese wrestling. The main difference between Mexican and Japanese wrestling is that the traditional Mexican style does not include "hardcore" wrestling, using weapons.

Japanese wrestling has been known for being "extreme" before ECW ever existed. The Japanese pururesu style includes aspects never seen in the United States, or only very recently. Pururesu is known for its great "high flying" acrobatic style of wrestling, as well as "hardcore" or "deathmatch" which includes weapons.

Frontier Marshal Arts Wrestling (FMW) is the definition of deathmatch wrestling. Many of the most famous hardcore wrestlers have competed in this promotion or become stars through it. They have also originated some of the most dangerous forms of competition.

Description

Pro-wrestling is a scripted series of holds, moves, and submissions performed in a match. Matches are put on inside a ring, or "squared circle". A show is run by a "promoter" who works with "bookers" to plan out the shows and matches.

The action can go from pure "mat" wrestling, to "high flying" luche libre, to "hardcore" deathmatches using barbed wire and chairs, or a mix of them. These are known as wrestling styles.
